Fire Alarm Checklist 

Security Fire Protection District Fire Alarm Checklist

All Plans Must Have A Plan Review Application For Review

  • Owner Name
  • Occupant name
  • Approved street address
  • Name, address, telephone number, fax number, and email address of fire alarm installation contractor
  • Signature/Seal of a qualified person holding either a NICET Level III/IV certification in fire alarm systems or a licensed State of Colorado Professional Engineer
  • Point of compass on each page
  • Scale and graphical representation
  • A detailed explanation of the scope of work
  • Type of alarm system
  • Name, address, and type of monitoring agency

Building Information

  • Ceiling height and construction detail
  • Building construction type
  • Occupancy classification of each area/room
  • Building Elevation

System Information

  • Device legend to include: Make, Model, Temperature rating, candela rating
  • Wire Legend to include: wire type and size
  • Complete riser detail
  • Addressable fire alarm systems plans shall provide a detailed list of all address used for each alarm device. This information shall be provided in a manner so as to display the device identification number, type of device, location of the device and the location description of the device as it will be displayed on the fire alarm control panel ( FACP)
  • A zoned fire alarm system shall include the zone identification of each zone to be displayed at the fire alarm control panel (FACP)
  • Power connection
  • Battery calculations
  • Voltage drop calculations
  • Interface of all fire safety functions
  • Intended areas of coverage
  • Sequence of operation

Plan Information

  • Floor plan indicating use of all rooms
  • Location of fire alarm control panel (FACP) and remote annunciator
  • Location of the fire sprinkler system, fire department connection including horn/strobe unit
  • Location and details of all tamper switches, control relays and etc.
  • Location of all elevators and elevator equipment rooms
  • Location of all duct detectors ( and remote test switch is required)
  • Location of partitions, fire wall and/or area separation walls and rating classifications
  • Location of all electromagnetic door holders and associated smoke detectors shall be indicated. The ceiling on either side of these doors shall also be provided
  • Location of all initiation devices shall be indicated. Include point-to – point wiring and the circuit number between devices
  • All candela ratings shall be indicated on the plans next to the device.
  • Sufficient information shall be provided when submitting system additions so as to ensure that the existing system will adequately support the increased demand.

Manufacture data sheets shall be provided with all fire alarm plans

Sprinkler and Alarm Guideline 

Fire Sprinkler 20 Heads or Alarm 5 devices Guideline Letter

In accordance with Section 903.7 of the 2003 International Fire Code as amended by the Security Fire Department

The fire sprinkler additions or modifications to existing commercial sprinkler systems that involve 20 fire sprinkler heads or less, 5 or less fire alarm devices will not require a plan review/permit by the Fire Department AHJ; however, a letter from a Pikes Peak Regional Building Department (PPRBD) licensed sprinkler/alarm contractor shall be submitted as notification that work is being performed.

General Requirements

General Requirements The letter shall be on the sprinkler contractor’s letterhead and shall include the following information:

  1. All work performed will be completed by the PPRBD licensed sprinkler/alarm contractor indicated on the letterhead.
  2. The hydraulic supply to the system in this area will be sufficient and that no hydraulic overloading exists.
  3. The system will be installed in accordance with all applicable local and national standards (e.g. International Building Code, International Fire Code and NFPA 13).
  4. The scope of the work being conducted including the building name and address as well as interior area location.
  5. The number of heads or devices being relocated and/or installed.
  6. A time schedule of the work being performed, giving start and completion dates.
  7. No inspections will be performed on this minor work unless a special request is made or the Fire Jurisdiction elects to make quality control checks on the work being performed.

Additional Notes:

  1. This program does not apply to spray booths, NFPA 13D/13R systems, special hazard systems, or other special stipulations previously mandated and required by the Fire Authority Having Jurisdiction.
  2. All systems with more than 20 heads or more then 5 alarm devices must conform to all local and state standards including plan submittal, permits, and other requirements.
  3. The 20-Head Letter program does not release the sprinkler designer, contractor or installer from providing a fully functional fire protection system that is completely compliant with NFPA 13 and the 2003 International Fire Code as locally amended

    The Security Fire Protection District Insurance Services (ISO) Office Fire Protection Classification effective June 1, 2014, is a 3/10.

    All Security Fire Protection addresses are within 5 miles of a fire station and within 1,000’ of a fire hydrant.
